Twenty-four of the most recent (then 1930) of the stories, showing Mr Marshall's whimsical art at its highest level of accomplishment, are here collected in book form with their natural corollary of drawings by George Morrow. An uncommon title by this author, from the popular magazine 'PUNCH'. This example has survived exceptionally well, particularly with dw/dj protection and unusually, without the usual discolouration and other imperfections usually encountered or expected in a book of this age. George Morrow (c. 1869-1955) Born Belfast, brother of artists Albert and Edwin Morrow.Studied in Paris.Illustrated many boys' books for the Seeley Service (1890-1908) publisher. He was a contributor to satirical magazine 'PUNCH' for nearly 50 years (1906-1954),joining the staff in 1924,and was Art Editor (1932-37).Morrow was best known for his humorous drawings, but his children' illustrations were descriptive and lively. He had an unpretentious and lucid graphic style, which was easily recognisable. He concentrated on depicting people rather than their settings, and gave particular emphasis to gesture and facial expressions, often, for this purpose, enlarging the heads of his figures in his humorous illustrations. R.G.G. Price, who described him as a "cheerful Bohemian Irishman" observed that "Morrow in his prime, which lasted much longer than with most humorous artists, could draw a simple little figure with a face that was funny per se.Much of his work was straightforward anachronism." He also considered that "his versatility and his variety make some of the later draughtsmen look tired and repetitive." He lived in Richmond,London and later in Thaxted,Essex.
